My camera is a nikon d60, and depending on your price range i would suggest a nikon d3000 is the best for around 1k (which is what i purchased my camera for except the d3000 didn't come out until more recently and it is far better) :D although if you like canons the 1000D is equivalent to my D60 and for around 1k too :)
if you want to go one step better, nikon d5000 or canon 450D.
